PREDICTING
CHILD ABUSE
Can risk of child abuse be predicted?
Yes, says a research team
at the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation in Queensland,
Australia which studied 151 mothers immediately after they
had given birth and then again seven months later.
Almost half of the women were single, separated or divorced.
The predictors for abuse, according
to Hospital Foundation clinical fellow Dr. Susan Cadzow include:
financial stress; an incomplete high school education; domestic
violence, verbal or social abuse; and an elevated Edinburgh
Postnatal Depression Scale score.
The results says Dr. Cadzow,
indicate that the assessment of the risk is "possible
and simple, and is related to perceived stress at the time
surrounding the delivery."
